Results - 2008 Tournament Oban's annual West Highland Tennis Championships took place at Atlantis Leisure from Saturday 28th June to Sunday 4th July and in a fitting conclusion to what is regarded as one of the best tournaments on the Scottish circuit, two of Scotland's top ten met in the final of the Men's Singles on Sunday afternoon. In the end, it was Jamie Murray's ex-doubles partner Colin Fleming who emerged victorious over Jamie's coach Alan MacDonald in one of the best Tennis matches seen in Oban for many years. Scottish No.5 MacDonald comfortably took the first set 6-3 but Fleming fought back to take the next two sets 6-3, 6-2 to win his second West Highland Tennis Championships title. In the Ladies Singles, it was an all-Newlands affair with defending champion Jan Oliphant retaining her title by defeating Christine Lockhart in straight sets 6-3, 6-0. Earlier on in the week, the popular local events got the tournament underway and provided a mixture of both competitive and sociable tennis for local players before the main Tennis Scotland Senior Grand Prix event at the weekend. The tournament committee had managed to attract the strongest field in the history of the Championships and spectators enjoyed a very high standard of tennis throughout the weekend. After the prizegiving, Men's champion Colin Fleming proclaimed the tournament as "one of the best on the Scottish circuit" and many of the other competitors promised to return next year having enjoyed both the competitive and social aspects of the weekend. Tournament organisers would like to thank Atlantis Leisure, the many local businesses and Argyll & Bute Council for their continued support of the Championships.
