2007 West Highland Tennis Championships

Oban’s annual West Highland Tennis Championships took place at Atlantis Leisure from Saturday 30th June to Sunday 8th July. Local events were held first and then the week culminated with the main Tennis Scotland Senior Grand Prix event.

The local events were very well supported and provided a mixture of both competitive and sociable tennis. Junior competitions were held during the day on Tuesday and Wednesday with an excellent turnout from promising young players who received coaching as well as playing competitive matches. Fraser Brydon was awarded the Maureen McCulloch Memorial Quaich for the best young junior in the tournament having impressed the committee with his skill, attitude and commitment throughout the week.

The main Grand Prix event kicked off on the Friday with spectators enjoying a very high standard of tennis throughout the weekend from players hailing from Scotland, America & Northern Ireland. Local interest in the Gents Singles was sadly cut short on Friday when all four local entrants were knocked out in the early stages of the draw. However the competitive experience gained by the locals will hopefully bode them well for the future.

Finals Day was held on Sunday with the Gents Singles final being contested by Scottish No.11 Jordan Gray of Thorn Park and defending champion Kenny Wood from Bridge of Allan. After a closely fought first set with Jordan edging it 6/4, he upped the ante in the second to win it 6/1 and claim his first West Highland Tennis Championships title. In the Ladies Singles, it was an all-Newlands affair with defending champion Jan Oliphant retaining her title by beating Christine Lockhart in straight sets 6/2, 6/2.

The committee would like to thank Atlantis Leisure, the many local businesses and Argyll & Bute Council for their continued support of the Championships. After the prizegiving, many of the competitors promised to return next year having enjoyed both the competitive and social aspects of the tournament.
