Horrendous weather didn’t stop the West Highland Tennis Championships from managing to conclude the majority of events on Sunday at Atlantis Leisure.
Despite heavy rain showers and gusts of around 40mph on finals day, players admirably took to the court to ensure that tournament referee Mary McLean only had to move the latter stages of the Ladies Under-21 singles to an extra day on Monday.
Scottish No.12 Keith Meisner, from Elgin, impressively won the Gents singles without dropping a set, beating St Andrews’ Tim Weir 6-3 6-4 in the final. The 23-year-old was formerly coached by shinty legend and former Scottish junior tennis champion Ronald Ross when he competed on the LTA junior circuit along with a young Andy Murray, and impressed spectators with his high level of play.
In the Ladies singles, No.1 seed Jan Oliphant, from Newlands, also failed to drop a set, beating Stirling University’s Aimee Black in the final 6-2 6-3 to regain the title she lost last year.
Several local players also competed in the open events to test themselves against high quality opposition. Best local achievement of the weekend goes to Willie Gemmell who reached the third round of the Men’s singles. The 23-year-old saved a match point in his second round match against Mark Gaffney, of St Serfs, before clinching victory in a tight deciding championship tie-break 12-10.
The local events held in the run-up to the main championship events provided an enjoyable mix of competitive and social tennis for local players of all ages and abilities. 14-year-old Gregor Brydon won the Maureen McCulloch Quaich for the best young player after showing great promise and tremendous attitude on court during the week.
The tournament committee would like to thank Atlantis Leisure, the many local businesses and Argyll & Bute Council for their continued support of the Championships.
